Materials: Hard & Soft
Greater Denton Arts Council
January 26 – March 20, 2008
For 21 years, the annual juried exhibition Materials: Hard & Soft has brought the best contemporary craft from around the country to Denton. This year, officials returned to the exhibition’s roots by enlisting the help of the Materials: Hard & Soft founder, Georgia Gough, to judge the entries.
The exhibit highlights the best in modern craft, includes exquisite furniture, ceramics, fabric, delicately fashioned jewelry, paper work, and metal. The exhibit always promotes risk-taking artists who play with materials, though they never explore at the expense of craftsmanship. Gough, a ceramic artist and retired art professor from the University of North Texas, says the exhibition has changed a great deal in the past two decades. “In the early years, in ceramics, for example, a pot was a pot,” Gough says. “Now, the work is tending toward sculptural forms.” “Before I looked at a single image this year I selected two criteria by which to judge the pieces,” Gough said in her juror’s statement. “These were craftsmanship and innovation. Some objects may be stronger in one than in the other. This arbitrary decision automatically eliminated some pieces, but I believe these limitations define the exhibition.”
The Greater Denton Arts Council is located at 400 east Hickory St., in Denton Texas. The Gallery is open from 1-5pm daily, except Monday. For more information call 940-382-2787 or go to www.dentonarts.com .
