Iron: Twenty Ten
The National Ornamental Metal Museum
Memphis, TN
May 28-August 29, 2010

With an eye toward the future of a vital art form, Iron: Twenty Ten offers a survey of the finest contemporary blacksmithing in the United States. Employing both traditional and innovative approaches, the selected work demonstrates the tremendous breadth of ideas and depth of talent found in American blacksmithing today. The work, from an exciting mix of established and emerging artists, was selected by a jury of prominent blacksmiths and scholars, including Anna Fariello, Tom Joyce, Richard Quinnell and James Wallace. The exhibition demonstrates the variety of forms that contemporary blacksmithing can take, including abstract and representational sculpture, vessels, architectural ironwork, firescreens, furniture, and other functional items. The qualities that unite the exhibition are a commitment to the highest levels of craft and a point of view that is both distinct and contemporary. Taken as a whole, the exhibition offers both the casual viewer and the seasoned metalsmith a comprehensive picture of the state of American blacksmithing today. (more…)

Studio Furniture at Pritam & Eames
Pritam & Eames
East Hampton, NY
May 28 – July 1, 2010

Studio Furniture at Pritam & Eames opens on May 28 and runs through July 1. Now in its 29th year, this anniversary show introduces new furniture by artist-craftsmen long associated with the East Hampton gallery: David Ebner, Thomas Hucker, Michael Hurwitz, Judy Kensley McKie, Kristina Madsen, Wendy Maruyama, Don Miller, Brian Newell, Zivko Radenkov, Rich Tannen, Fran Taubman, James Schriber, William Walker, and Howard Werner.

“The work of these high-crafters assures technical excellence as a starting point. What makes their work vital, however, is authorship — singularity of vision – and the handling of utility, furniture’s historic responsibility. The connection between authorship and workmanship is the trademark of the studio furniture movement: the person who conceives the piece, makes it,” Bebe Johnson, gallery partner, says. “Some might stray further from the fully functional furniture piece but, in all cases, the consideration is never abandoned.” (more…)
